Student Computers I get a message telling me my H: Drive is full I can not open up my Word or Excel document on the computer, how come? I have forgotten my password. What do I do? My floppy disk is not working. What do I do? The computer is doing funny things. What do I do? Do I have to pay for printing? I have run out of printing. What do I do? Where can I find my WebCT username? I want to listen to audio on the computer. How do I do that?
When I try to log in I get the message "ACCESS DENIED This account is already logged on another computer... " Students are only able to logon to one computer at a time. This message indicates that you are already logged on another computer. You must log off the other computer and then you will be able to logon. If you do not know what other computer you are logged onto then you must come to the Computer Help Desk on the 5th floor with your Student ID card. They can fix your account for you there. I get a message telling me my H: Drive is full You only have a limited amount of space in your H: Drive. If you can no long save anything to the H: Drive because it is full you will need to delete or move any unused or unnecessary files. The H: Drive is for school related files only. I can not open up my Word or Excel document on the computer, how come? Students are having problems with their Office 2007 documents not opening at the College. Students should be saving their documents as Word 2003, excel 2003, ppt 2003 on their Office 2007 version at home. The new version of office adds an x to the extension and as with any version of Office - it is backwards compatible - not forwards. I have forgotten my password. What do I do? Go to the Educational Technologies Computer Help Desk in the Learner Centre. Present your NorQuest student ID card and Educational Technologies staff will reset your password. If you do not have a valid NorQuest student ID card, you will be referred to the Registrar's Office to get one. Educational Technologies will not reset passwords without a NorQuest student ID card being presented; other forms of identification are not accepted. My floppy disk is not working. What do I do? On an average day, Ed Tech will see at least 10 floppy disks that are corrupted. The quality of manufacturing has gone down and the disks are very susceptible to environmental hazards (dust, dirt, scratches etc). As a result, we recommend a USB memory device (e.g. USB key, flash memory, thumb drive). Save your files in at least two places e.g. H: drive and your USB device. Do NOT save to My Documents. After every reboot, the computer will revert to a clean state and your files will be lost. In My Computer, you will be able to see a drive with your student ID number. It will be followed by an H: in parentheses. The H: is your personal storage space on the NorQuest network. This storage space resides on a NorQuest server which is backed up every night. You will be able to access your H: drive from any computer in the College. The computer is doing funny things. What do I do? Try restarting the computer. Rebooting the computer will fix 99% of problems. If that does not work, try moving to a different computer. Students have a print quota that is set at the beginning of the fall semester or at the beginning of their program. The amount varies depending on your program of study. The majority of students have 500 pages. Do I have to pay for printing? No. However, if you use up all of the pages in your print quota, you will have to buy more. The cost is $0.05/page plus GST. The minimum purchase is 100 pages. I have run out of printing. What do I do? Go to the Registrar's Office and purchase more pages. They will give you a receipt. Bring the receipt to Educational Technologies Computer Help Desk on the 5 th floor. The staff will add the pages to your account. I pressed the Save button the last time I was working on the computer and now cannot find my file. Where is it? You probably saved to My Documents. You should not save here. After every reboot, the computer will revert to a clean state and any files in My Documents will be erased. You have to save to your H: drive and/or another memory device (like your USB key). Where can I find my WebCT username? It is given out by the instructor of the class with the WebCT component. The instructor has a class list of usernames and a basic WebCT how-to sheet that she distributes to students. If you forget your WebCT username, ask your instructor. I tried to login but the computer says my account has expired. It will not let me login. What do I do? Look at the expiry date on your student ID card. Computer accounts will expire at the end of the day of the date stated on each student ID Card. If the date is valid, go to the Educational Technologies Computer Help Desk in the Learner Centre. Present your student ID card and let them know that you are getting a message saying your account has expired. I want to listen to audio on the computer. How do I do that? To listen to any audio from the computer you will need to bring your own headphones. You can plug them into the front of the computer to listen. The Educational Technologies Help Desk on the 5th floor does not provide headphones to students. Last updated: October 5, 2009
